Chewell School Sports Hall at the Ferry Centre Oxford 1996

This was a four court Sports Hall designed for a Secondary School in Oxford but co-located with an existing public swimming pool. New changing rooms were placed between the two buildings, fronted by a glazed corridor which linked the existing reception with the new facility, and allowed the School to use a separate entrance during the day.

Innovations included

* Underfloor heating from condensing boliers running 24 hours per day at very low temperature to avoid high start costs for School of heating from cold in the mornings.

* Glare free natural lighting using a double bow truss between the badminton courts and under-eaves inward sloping clerestory translucent panels.

* Spectators area ramped up 300mm to allow both ambulant and disabled spectators to have clear views over the re-bound  boards.

The facility was the subject of a study by the Sports Council.
