Project : new purpose built house
Koru Barn
Milton Keynes
Completed 2013 - New Build, 5 bedroom Timber frame/timber clad house.
This is an interesting project for a client who was originally from New Zealand. This is situated on the flood plains of Loughton Brook which required the house to be built on stilts. The chosen solution was to build a platform on piles, exposing the steel frame and providing a concrete deck on corrugated permanent form work.
A bridge runs from the deck 15 meters over the brook to the rest of the garden. In order to keep costs down the structure of the bridge was made from lattice trussed rafters.
The superstructure is clad in Northern Larchand a metal standing seam roof.
This is a simple house but with exciting features such as fully retractable screens to completely open up the corner of the living room, large deck jetties over the river and outdoor room. While planning requirements dictated a 'barn like' building, the design is contemporary and reflects the 'life-style' of the family of the client. It incorporates a ground source heat pump, PV cells and a MUHR system and achieve CSH level 5.
Total build cost £330,000.
