Skate MK
Milton Keynes

I can demonstrate a track record of working effectively on a number of highly successful co-productions in a highly consultative framework. However primarily I would like to offer by way of example of communicating with a hard to reach group and building consensus between strongly polarized communities, the SK8 MK initiative. This initiative was begun in the Autumn of 2002 as a result of growing concerns in the CMK Partnrership particularly with the private sector to the business members that skateboarding and other street sports were destroying the infrastructure and frightening pedestrians. There was a strong move to ban street sports and the police looked at the possibility of arrests for criminal damage.

I and my landscape and urban design teams were of the view that a heavy handed approach would not work as the challenge and risk elements would be enhanced and escalate the problem into open conflict. Milton Keynes is a world famous place for street sports because of its modern infrastructure and this needed to be recognized.
