Archway Pool London 1988

Andrew Armes as Project Architect at London Borough of Islington, new build Leisure Pool, sports and leisure centre. Designed to combine the best of leisure pools and lane swimming pools. The free-form shape has four 25m lanes across its width and the introduction of islands and peninsular in the pool break up the impact of the wave machine as it reaches the 'beach' and creates safe areas for young children and nervous adults. De-stigmatized use by disabled-users was a key design, such as tactile maps, contrast site lines, handrails around the pool, slides for entry and the beach area itself. This was rewarded by an unsolicited disabled user award.
